Gay Mirror

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

khmermirror.jpg

Every homo needs a mirror, so this antique Khmer piece of work from Asian master Piece should do:

Highly decorative and very large circular tray/mirror of well patinated bronze, Khmer empire, 12th c. Being 35 cm across and 1.8 cm thick, this is an impressive piece. The circular object was either used as an offering tray or as a mirror, smaller similar objects are classified as mirrors, while such a huge piece as this would prove too heavy, at least to function as a handheld mirror. Front-side is plain, while the back has circular designs. Comes with customs-made stand.

This certainly would make a perfect objet d’art and practical mirror for the gay Asian model’s vanity table. At 450 Euro it is not even too expensive. Verdict: GAY

The Penis Sheath

koteka.jpg

From answers.com we get this explanation:

The koteka, horim, or penis sheath is a phallocrypt or phallocarp traditionally worn by native male inhabitants of some (mainly highland) ethnic groups in western New Guinea to cover their genitals.

Would it behoove the gay Asian esthete to have a koteka mounted on their walls? If you’re into S&M and rubber, it might be an idea to hang one in your play room, to be reminded of the origin of your brand new rubber penis sheath. Otherwise, I would not recommend it. Verdict: NOT

Burmese Strongman

Workers unite! This piece reminds me a bit of the Soviet style socialist realist tradition. Like yesterday’s item, it is from Asian Master Piece, and appropriately called Burmese Strongman. Kind of sexy, methinks, and it will be a graceful addition to the display cabinet of any out and proud gay Asian worker! Verdict: GAY

Penis Paper Weight

How absolutely delightful, this penile piece of bronze (source) from the middle of the 20th century. Unless you’re out and proud, it might be a bit over the top in your grey workaday office, but it would really make a perfect conversation piece for your gay Asian dinner parties. I love it! Verdict: GAY

Made In India

Friday, February 15th, 2008

textilea.jpg

This cloth was made in India for the Sumatra market. I don’t feel quite sure if it will look right in your average gay Asian household. It might be a tad too pedestrian so I’ll give it a pass. Verdict: NOT

One Of A Kind

A stunning pice by Jon Eric Riss and a perfect centerpiece for the gay Asian art collector, if only you could buy this. It was on display last year in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art and presumably not for sale. Verdict: GAY

Aboriginal Art

Not strictly from Asia, but in the spirit of yesterday’s apology to the Aboriginal people of Australia, I thought this painting might be appropriate. It would certainly make a beautiful addition to any gay Asian loft. I found it here. Verdict: GAY

The Pink Lotus

I guess this piece would fit into any gay Asian apartment if you’re into mother of pearl. It features the pink lotus, a motif often recurring in Asian art. Via Zbohy. Gay or not: GAY.

Chinese Love

Deep purples and reds and handstitched. It’s made by someone who calls herself Plain Jane. That’s a turnoff. Despite the unfortunate name, this would be a graceful addition on the walls of any gay Asian urbanite’s apartment. Verdict: GAY

We’ll start of our first post on this blog in which we give GAY or NOT verdicts about Asian art, with a gorgeous ceremonial cloth from early 20th century Sumatra with bird and fish motifs, made of cotton. Our verdict: GAY. From Tai Gallery on AsianArt.com
